ARHA RURAL HEALTH HONOREE - Jeri Dunkin, PhD, RN
ARHA RURAL HEALTH AWARDS PROGRAM:
The Alabama Rural Health Association is pleased to recognize individuals, groups, or organizations which are deserving of recognition for their involvement with the health of Alabama’s rural citizens. Nominations are continuously solicited from ARHA members for two statewide awards. Periodically, (approximately annually) the ARHA Board of Directors will evaluate nominations and honor a recipient for each award at a statewide rural health activity. Current award recipients will be recognized in conjunction with the Governor’s proclamation of Rural Health Week in Alabama at a date in early 2002.
Nominees who are not selected for a statewide award may receive recognition on
the ARHA Web site and all nominations are held for future consideration, so a
nomination form needs to be completed only once. You may update a nomination
with additional information at any time.
Please take a few minutes to thank and recognize a deserving individual, group,
or organization by nominating them for one of these prestigious awards. The two
awards and the criteria for both are as follows:
RURAL HEALTH PROVIDER EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Presented to a provider who both lives and works in an Alabama
community which is rural and whose
livelihood comes from delivering health care in an exceptional manner either
through direct hands-on services or in the administration of services. Nominees
should be individuals whom have made lasting contributions in delivering
services to a community through tireless efforts which demonstrate an unselfish,
compassionate, and cooperative attitude.
RURAL VOLUNTEER EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AWARD
Presented to an individual who both lives and works in an Alabama
community which is rural and whose volunteer
activities have achieved excellence in promoting the availability of rural
health services especially to underserved populations. Nominees should be
individuals whose civic activities have strengthened rural health care delivery
through community leadership, creativity, and a concern for underserved
populations.
BILLIE GILLILAND EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO RURAL ACCIDENT PREVENTION AWARD
This award is presented to an individual or organization whose activities have made an exceptional contribution in preventing rural accidents.
This award is named after Billie Gilliland, a champion of rural health from Choctaw County, who was lost in a rural motor vehicle accident in 2004. When the county's only hospital in Butler closed in 1993 and most of the physicians relocated, Mrs. Gilliland went to work to assure that the residents would have local healthcare available. She was able to secure the services of two physicians and became a founder of 1st Health Treatment Center in Butler.
Mrs. Gilliland was on her way to interview a doctor in Meridian, Mississippi who had some interest in moving to Butler when her full-size pickup truck collided with a utility truck. Her death drew special news media attention because her husband Chuck Gilliland, a state trooper, was the first law enforcement officer on the crash scene.
